Sweet Home Alabama and Sitcom Living Rooms

February 27th, 2019  |  1 hr 5 mins

Sitcom, early 2000s, friends, hatewatch, hatewatch with us, how i met your mother, living room, podcast, rom com, romantic comedy, romcom, roseanne, sweet home alabama

It's a real grab bag of hatewatch nostalgia this week! Fate leads us to revisit Kirstie's "favorite romcom of all time," Sweet Home Alabama, and we have some thoughts about low rise flare jeans and jokes that make us uncomfortable in 2019. After a brief discussion about novelty Instagram belts we have a chat about the living rooms of sitcoms, because nobody likes a high end finish like Hatewatch With Us. Come for True American, the safety version, stay for... a teaser of our new side project? Stay tuned for more details coming soon!

Return from Hiatus and Netflix, What Have You Done?

October 2nd, 2018  |  57 mins 5 secs

Hulu, Netflix, TV, bobs burgers, brooklyn 99, brooklyn nine-nine, cheers, cw, ever wood, film, friends, hatewatch, hatewatch with us, movies, podcast, romcom, streaming, television, thought bubble, thought bubble audio, to all the boys i've loved before, wings

This week we are taking you through the hole in the fabric of space-time, back 5 weeks to our first attempt at returning from hiatus. It was a simpler time when Kirstie was getting a lot less sleep and watching a lot more TV, and Kelsey was living her best RomCom life. First we discussed all the TV Kirstie watched on maternity leave, including the gringiness of 90s sitcoms, the argument for the 30 minute sitcom as a format, and Kirstie admitting she was right to lose the great Brooklyn 99 Fight of 2018. Then we have a rare opportunity to put a positive spin on everyone's favorite segment, Netflix, What Have You Done? With a pep in our step and sheer delight in our mics, we review the Netflix RomCom To All The Boys I loved Before, as well as praising the platform for their contributions to the RomCom Renaissance. For the second week in a row, we're glad to be back!

Catastrophe and Characters You Hate

April 25th, 2017  |  1 hr 13 mins

Romcoms, Scrubs, TV, almost famous, catastrophe, character development, friends, girls, hatewatch, hatewatch with us, how i met your mother, podcast, thought bubble audio, unlikeable characters, you're the worst

This episode contains a lot of soul searching, deep shit, and our feelings about human emotions. In the first lesson of Kelsey's Rom Com curriculum, we watch Catastrophe and revel in its Britishness, saltiness, and joyfulness. Then, we talk about characters you're intended to hate and what it means to like or hate characters. We cover ground from the HGTV Prestige Russel Crowe blockbuster Almost Famous, to Friends, How I Met Your Mother, Scrubs, You're The Worst, Girls, and many other properties in between. It's basically a cityscape of properties with hate-able characters, and we round the whole thing out with a deep exploration of our most human vulnerabilities. We also finally created the Hatewatch With Us Drinking Game to make these episodes a little higher stakes.

PS: We know Almost Famous is actually by Cameron Crowe. Shut up.
